Dealing With Setbacks: Getting More Information
Okay, so I lied! We’re not talking about taking control today (promise that will show up tomorrow). First things first! So, you’ve suffered a setback and let yourself feel the emotional impact without wallowing. You figured out the truthiness of your new situation, distinguishing what’s real from what is fear-based. And, there are probably places where you need more information before you spring into action.
Look at the list you made yesterday, assessing what has really changed and what is really an issue that needs to be addressed (it’s okay if you need to do it quickly now, I’ll close my eyes for two minutes). Now, ask yourself what information you need to make sound decisions about how to deal with these challenges. Get a friend or caseworker to help. If it’s another operation, do you know how much time that adds onto recuperation time in the hospital? Will there be additional rehab? Will you run out of sick days, vacation days, and personal days at work? Is there a possibility that co-workers could donate sick days to you or the person you’re caregiving? If someone is coming home with an unexpected or more severe disability, what changes do you need to make in your home? Are there programs to get these modifications made for free (probably yes if you’re a veteran). What about transportation needs; do you need a van or a wheelchair lift?
You get the drift. Brainstorm, be proactive, try to identify barriers before they come up. Knowledge is power, especially when you’re dealing with setbacks and caregiving issues. Eyes wide open. Now, get working on finding the answers you need. Ask for help if you need it!
